First Communion Photos on Barcelona's Beaches
First Communion photos on the beach work because the setting does half the job. In Spain these photos are usually taken in a church or another formal space. Over the last few years, though, more families have started looking for places where the day feels less staged.
One choice that keeps growing is the beach — in this case, the beaches around Barcelona. If you like the sea, stay with me: here is how to plan a shoot by the water.
Plan the beach First Communion shoot
Before the First Communion photo shoot on the beach, it pays to think through the small details. Here is what I recommend:
- Visit the beaches first: go with your child, look around together and let them choose the one they like most.
- Check how busy the beach gets: Barcelona's beaches can be packed at certain hours, especially in summer. This matters more than people expect — book the shoot for a quiet hour so you don't get crowds in the background.
- Think about the light at different hours: light decides how the photos look. From my experience, early morning or the hour before sunset gives soft, golden light. In the middle of the day the sun is too strong and leaves hard shadows on faces.
Pick the right beach
Want to get out of the city a little? These beaches outside Barcelona work well:
- Gavà Beach: about half an hour south of the city. A big dune and low green plants sit behind the sand, so you get a calm, natural background.
- Garraf Beach: known for the row of small wooden beach huts painted in bright colors along the shore. They give the photos a more playful background, and the train stops a short walk from the sand.
- Caldes d'Estrac Beach: a seafront walk lined with palm trees, under an hour north of Barcelona on the coastal train. Good if you want something other than open sand.
Choose what everyone wears
The Communion outfit and what the family wears
For your child's outfit, look for something that feels like them and still works on sand. In Spain the classic look is a long white dress or a small sailor suit, but you are not tied to it. Show them a few more modern designs and let them pick.
Go for light, comfortable pieces. Natural fabrics like linen or cotton breathe and handle the heat much better.
If the rest of the family is in the photos, they should also be comfortable and match the same style. If you like photographing your family together, a family shoot on the beach works well right after the Communion.
Think about colors
The sea, the sand and the sky already give you a palette. Match the clothes to it and your child stands out against the beach instead of fighting with it. If you want something less formal, a few family photos in different spots are a good way to finish the day.
The colors that work best are white, beige, cream, sand and gold, plus sky blue, turquoise and soft aqua green.

It helps when your child and I meet before the shoot. Come by, let them tell me their own ideas, and I will already know what they like before we are standing on the sand.

3. Use what the beach gives you
Work with the beach itself. Play the colors of the outfit against the bright sand, the deep blue of the sea and the sky. Building those into the frame gives you a real place, not a backdrop.
4. Pick the right hour
Choose the hour carefully. Early morning or the time just before sunset keeps you away from the crowds and the heat, the light is softer and everyone is more relaxed.
Post-Communion beach shoots: a good alternative
A post-Communion shoot on the beach is a good option if you want the whole family together somewhere different. The ceremony day has its own pressure; meeting at the beach afterwards lets everyone breathe. Children love it, because they can run and explore without worrying about ruining the ceremony outfit.
