What to know before your first self photo studio session: 20 real questions

What to know before your first self photo studio session: 20 real questions
Contents

Short answer: A self photo studio session runs 20-60 minutes depending on the package (at YOULO, Ronda de la Universitat 33 next to Plaza Catalunya: from €60 for 20 min up to €100 for 60 min). You get every photo the same day by email, and nobody sees your gallery but you. No need to arrive made-up, no posing skills required (the mirror guides you, ten minutes is enough to get the hang of it), works for kids 3+, grandparents and dogs, and the room is private and climate-controlled. Tami’s pre-session rule: “a couple of outfit changes and some pose ideas from Pinterest.” If you want to try the format, you can book your YOULO session directly from the site.

If you’re reading this, you already know what a self photo studio is and you’re one step away from booking. What’s left are the operational questions — the ones a landing page never answers, but the DMs we get every week do. We’ve gathered the 20 questions that come up most, grouped into six blocks. Short answers, no fluff — just what we actually see at YOULO Barcelona.

Will the photos turn out OK if I can’t pose (and what if I freeze)?

Direct answer to both halves: yes, they turn out fine without posing skills (the mirror guides you and you get the hang of it in ten minutes), and if you freeze at the start that’s actually a good sign — without an audience watching, the freeze melts in five minutes.

Will the photos turn out without posing skills?

Yes, they do — even without posing skills. The semi-transparent mirror shows you in real time, so you correct your posture intuitively, the same way you adjust your shirt collar in the mirror before going out. The lighting is already calibrated and locked — nothing to touch. Most clients get the hang of it in the first ten minutes. After that, it’s just trying things.

Tami, professional photographer and YOULO founder, explains it like this when people DM her:

“There’s full freedom here, but if you want inspiration, my advice is to open Pinterest and search photo studio shoot — family, couples, groups — and save what you like. It’s an addictive process: you go looking and end up with a bunch of fun references that are easy to recreate later. Instagram works too.” — Tami, founder of YOULO

What if I freeze or get embarrassed?

Freezing up at the start is a good sign. When you’re sure you’re “not photogenic” and suddenly it’s just you in front of a mirror with nobody watching, you start moving, trying, looking. You play music yourself via Bluetooth from your phone. Five or ten minutes in, most people fully relax. No audience to judge = the freeze deflates fast.

The photos clients love most are the ones they’d never have dared to take with a photographer in the room. As our YOULO reel puts it: “no pressure, no shame” (see the reel on Instagram).

Is the quality really professional without a photographer?

Yes. The gear is the same as in a traditional studio: Sony full-frame camera hidden behind the mirror, professional flash, calibrated lights. The only thing that changes is who presses the button. Photos come out auto-processed with our color and light preset. Heavy manual retouch (skin, removing background elements) is an optional add-on, not something most clients need.

Is it really 100% private? Are there hidden cameras?

It’s the most sensitive question we get about any self photo studio, and it lands every week. The answer is direct: yes, it’s private, and no, there are no hidden cameras. In our YOULO room next to Plaza Catalunya the door stays closed for your whole session, no staff comes in — not even us. The only camera is the one behind the semi-transparent mirror — the one you control with the remote. We only check the first images at the start of the session, just to verify everything works technically. After that, nobody looks at your gallery again except you.

Here’s how Tami puts it when people ask in DMs:

“There are no hidden cameras. We don’t see your photos. If we’re giving you full freedom, it has to be real freedom. The only thing we check is the first few images at the start of the session, to make sure everything is working properly. The rest of the photos we only look at if you give us explicit permission to publish — and only then do we open the gallery.” — Tami, founder of YOULO

This is exactly why so many of our clients come in the first place: they take photos they’d never have dared to take with a photographer present — and those end up being their favorites. Tami covers it in the reel “at YOULO nobody’s watching, that changes everything” on our Instagram.

How long does it last, how many photos do I get, when are they delivered?

How long is the session really?

It depends on the package you choose. Three durations confirmed on the site:

The fixed price covers 1-2 people. From the third person onwards, it’s an extra €20 per person. Kids up to 3 are free. For bigger groups (5 people or more) we always recommend 60 minutes in the big room — time goes fast when you’re switching backdrops, organising the pose and retaking shots.

How many photos do I take and how many do I keep?

Photos during your slot are unlimited. In 40 minutes you typically end up with 200 to 400 shots. And here’s where it differs from a traditional studio: you keep absolutely all of them. No selection, no culling. They come pre-processed with our preset (consistent color and light), ready to publish.

Tami insists on this at the start of every session: take lots of photos, that’s the rule, not the exception.

Is the remote hard to use?

No. It’s a wireless remote that fits in your palm, with a single button. You look in the mirror, you like what you see, you press — photo done. Behind the mirror there are monitors where you can review the shots and retake the ones you don’t love. Foolproof: no client has ever needed to “learn how to use it” before starting.

When do I get the photos? And what if I’m late?

You get the gallery the same day, complete, by email a few minutes after the session ends. If you arrive late to your booking, the delay eats into your own time (slots are back-to-back and we can’t shift them), so it’s better to arrive 5 minutes early at YOULO Plaza Catalunya to set up your outfit and plug in your music without rushing.

And here’s a tip that comes straight from Tami’s experience after hundreds of sessions: there are three mistakes people make in the first three minutes that are worth dodging.

Mistake 1 — visible remote. As soon as I hand them the remote, a lot of people hold it with their arm stretched out, like they’re changing the channel from the sofa. I always say: hide it in your hand, it’s small, it doesn’t need to show. Otherwise every photo has that arm in the foreground.

Mistake 2 — sticking to the mirror. The lighting is fixed, calibrated for a specific distance. If you press up against the mirror, the flash hits your face full-on and the light gets harsh.

Mistake 3 — taking too few photos. At YOULO there’s no limit — at the end of the session you get all of them, already processed with our preset. Especially in big groups, somebody’s always got their eyes closed or looking the wrong way. From the same pose, take several. The more, the better.” — Tami, founder of YOULO

What to bring to your YOULO Plaza Catalunya session: makeup, clothes, props and music

Tami’s pre-session rule, before you head to Ronda de la Universitat 33, is the most anti-overthinking thing you’ll ever hear:

“Honestly, you don’t need to prepare. Bring a couple of outfit changes and grab some pose inspiration on Pinterest.” — Tami, founder of YOULO

Everything else is optional. But because we get the same DM questions over and over, here’s the breakdown.

Do I have to arrive made-up and styled?

Come as you are. There are mirrors in the room for last-minute touch-ups, but there’s no makeup artist on site — that’s a premium add-on, not part of the standard self photo studio packages. Tami’s tip: studio light is soft and flattering, so theatrical makeup isn’t needed. Stick with your usual routine and adjust on the spot.

What clothes work? Can I wear glasses?

For headshots or LinkedIn portraits, solid colors work best: navy, charcoal, off-white, black. Avoid thin stripes — they can cause moiré (wavy line patterns) on the photo. For group sessions, total freedom — better to play with colors than coordinate everything in black-and-white like grandparents’ photos. Glasses do work: the lighting is designed to avoid lens reflections.

Can I bring multiple outfits, props and my own music?

Yes to all three. For multiple outfit changes we recommend booking at least 40 minutes: the room is private, you change there and head back to the mirror. Props: at YOULO we have hats, glasses, seasonal backdrops (green at Christmas, blue or lavender in summer) and side furniture. And you can bring your own — birthday cake, balloons, a “future mom” sash, a book, whatever you like. Music: Bluetooth into the room speakers, your playlist from your phone. No Spotify algorithm choosing, no random background tracks.

Does it work for babies, kids, pets, grandparents? How many people fit in YOULO’s rooms?

This is an important section because not every answer is “yes.” There’s one specific case where Tami, as a professional photographer, openly recommends the other option.

Does it work for babies under 3? Tami’s honest answer

For babies and kids up to about three years old, Tami recommends a session with a photographer directly — not YOULO. The reason is operational, not marketing:

“With babies and small kids — up to about three — I’d choose a photographer. The photographer can read the situation, entertain the kid, find angles, adapt. YOULO’s camera is fixed, it doesn’t move.” — Tami, founder of YOULO

For formal newborn shoots, same logic: a newborn session needs safe handling of the baby, infinite patience and creative composition — that’s photographer work. If you just want a few family photos with the baby in your arms, no portfolio ambitions, YOULO works. For a varied gallery with carefully composed shots and controlled lighting, book a session with Tami at Wonderstory instead.

What about kids 3 and up?

That works. And it works exceptionally well. Tami’s straight tip:

“With small kids, give them the remote and let them direct. They’re great at it and they have ideas to spare.” — Tami, founder of YOULO

Kids under 3 enter free with the family package. From age 3, they turn into the best “directors” of the session.

What if the kid refuses to cooperate during the session?

Here YOULO has a real edge over a studio with a photographer: there’s no one pressuring or directing from outside, the room is yours. If a kid blocks, the trick is to hand them the remote so they “direct.” If even that doesn’t work, pause, water, change the backdrop. Without external pressure, kids relax in five minutes — the mirror is magnetic, you’ll see right away.

And grandparents? Pets?

Grandparents are the surprise of every group session. Tami says it clearly: they never hold back, they laugh and join in more than the rest of the group. The mirror activates an almost childlike dynamic — everyone ends up goofing around in front of it.

Dogs and cats are welcome at YOULO. One rule: clean paws before stepping onto the cyclorama. The practical tip:

“With dogs I do recommend bringing a snack, because the flash sometimes makes them nervous.” — Tami, founder of YOULO

If you’re coming with your pet, check our sessions with dogs and cats for the specifics of the format.

How many people fit in the rooms?

At YOULO, Ronda de la Universitat 33 next to Plaza Catalunya, we have two rooms:

The fixed package price covers 1-2 people. From the third onwards, each extra person is €20. Kids up to 3 don’t count (free). Dogs do count as one person in the package. For groups of five or more we always recommend 60 minutes in the big room — you need the time for the session to work properly.

If you’re organising a birthday, take a look at our birthday group sessions. If you’re coming multigenerational (parents, in-laws, grandparents), our family plans with grandparents are designed exactly for that.

Postproduction and delivery: retouch, prints, what’s included?

Do the photos come with professional retouch?

Photos come auto-processed with the studio preset: color correction, light adjustment, smart crop. It’s what most clients need to publish directly. Heavy manual retouch (detailed skin work, body adjustment, removing background elements) isn’t included by default in the package — it’s an optional extra on the final photos you choose. The full gallery as it lands is already ready for Instagram, LinkedIn or normal printing.

Do I get printed photos or just digital?

By default, everything is digital: full gallery by email the same day. We’re working on a few add-ons: advanced manual retouch, framed photos and albums. Tami mentions these are some of the most-requested extras, especially when the session is a gift (a family album for the grandparents is a tough one to top). If you want physical prints or an album, ask us when you book — some formats are already available on demand.

How do I book and what should I do before I arrive?

If after these 20 questions you’ve still got a specific one, message us on WhatsApp from the site. If not, book your YOULO session directly — we’re at Ronda de la Universitat 33, next to Plaza Catalunya. You pick the duration (40 minutes for €80 is the most popular), the number of people and the backdrop, and the room is yours. You get the full gallery by email the same day. And if you show up without Pinterest references and without an extra outfit, the session works just the same — the mirror, the remote and your own music do the rest.

Tami · Photographer and founder of Wonderstory and YOULO

I’ve been working as a photographer in Spain for eight years, focused on families and pregnancy in Barcelona. I opened YOULO in October 2024 when I noticed big families and groups of friends couldn’t get together for professional photos just because of the cost — I wanted a format where what you pay for is the time, not the photo.
