A birthday is a good excuse to get real photos of yourself, not another blurry phone shot from dinner. Whether you are planning a birthday photoshoot for yourself, for a friend or for someone you love, you are in the right place.

Here is what actually works: where to shoot, what to bring, and how to relax once the camera is on you.

Six ways to make your birthday photoshoot stand out

Want more than the usual smile-at-the-camera shots? These six ideas keep a birthday photoshoot from looking like everyone else's.

  1. Choose a location that means something

Think past the obvious park bench. Pick a place that matters to you, or to the person whose birthday it is. It should look good on camera and also feel like them: a rooftop you love, the beach you always end up on, a studio you have wanted to try.

  1. Add something unexpected

Unexpected props change the whole feel of a birthday photoshoot, whether it is for a woman, a man or a group of kids.  Shaped balloons and confetti are an easy start: they give your hands something to do and fill the frame at different heights.

  1. Go for candid over posed

The photos people keep are usually the ones taken between the poses. Instead of holding a smile, talk, laugh and move around, and let the camera do its job.

  1. Work with a creative photographer

If you book a photographer, look for someone with experience who is also open to your ideas. Ask to see full galleries rather than a few highlights, and tell them what you have in mind before the day.

5. Shoot the details

Details get lost in the rush of the day. Take a few minutes for the cake, the candles, the wrapped gifts and the faces around the table. Those are the photos you will be glad you have a year later.

6. Have fun

Try things. Want a few casual, silly shots? Go ahead. Prefer a full themed shoot? Do that. The point is to enjoy it.  And if you like a good celebration, have a look at our Christmas plans in Barcelona for the holiday season.

A birthday photoshoot at YOULO

At YOULO you shoot yourself, and the studio is yours: just you, no one else in the room. The camera sits behind a large mirror, so you see yourself full size while you shoot and take the photo with one click of the remote.

With our Self Portrait service you decide when to shoot and what to try, with no photographer watching. That is usually the difference: you relax, you laugh, and you end up with photos that look like you instead of stiff portraits.

Plan your birthday self-portraits

¿:

1. A party theme: We cannot build a full set in the studio, but you can bring the theme yourself with costumes and accessories.

2. A festive setup: Bring the things that say party: a bottle of cava (the local sparkling wine), string lights, number balloons for the age, or the cake itself.

3. Group photos: Bring your friends and family. Everyone loosens up faster in a group, and the poses get funnier by the minute. There is no limit on how many photos you take, so shoot as much as you want.

4. Props: Bring your own to break the ice and give the shoot a bit of character. Sunglasses, hats, jewelry, signs with a message: all of it works. Forgot yours? We keep a box of props in the studio for you.

5. Play with angles: Shooting on your own? Move around the set and try high, low and side angles instead of standing square to the mirror. With friends in the frame, push them to keep moving and use the whole studio.

6. A short video: On top of the photos, you can record a short video of the session, so you can see how the day actually went.

Book YOULO for your birthday shoot, or give it as a gift to the next birthday person in your life. We will see you at the studio.
