There comes a point when the ball pit just doesn’t work anymore. Your daughter looks at it and says that’s for little kids. But she’s not 15 either — not ready for dinner with friends or a concert. She’s in that awkward space between 8 and 13: too old for most things, too young for everything else.

Lea’s birthday: how we put together a full plan in central Barcelona
Lea was turning 10. Her best friends were coming from Dubai — well, not exactly: they’re friends from when they lived there, and now that they’re back in Barcelona they see each other at birthdays. She wanted to dance, take photos and eat pizza. Nothing wild, but finding a place where all of that worked in the city centre, without a car and without spending the afternoon in an industrial estate, wasn’t that easy.
The family lives in Sant Gervasi, 10 to 15 minutes by FGC from Plaza Cataluña. The plan had to work from there.
The decorations that made them feel like the stars
Before the session we set up the studio with number 10 balloons, props, feather hats and sunglasses. Nothing standard. The idea was that when they walked in, they’d already be in celebration mode — not in “let’s take some photos” mode.

That matters more than you’d think. The atmosphere does half the work.
The mirror and the remote: why it works without a photographer
The camera at YOULO sits behind a semi-transparent mirror. The girls see their reflection, not the lens. They held the remote — every photo was taken by them.
No photographer in front of them. No adult telling them “put your arm here” or “look over there”. Just them, the music and the mirror.
They chose the brown backdrop, put on the K-pop Huntrix playlist on Spotify and started. Choreographies, “model” poses, jumps. They repeated the same pose ten times until they liked the result. They walked up to the mirror to check how they looked. They experimented without fear of getting it wrong because no one was judging.
That’s the moment parents don’t usually see: when kids drop the shyness and become a different version of themselves.
From the session to Can Pizza: the full plan with zero transfers
When the first part ended, they crossed the street. Can Pizza is on Ronda Universitat, zero minutes from the studio. The girls had the photos on the mum’s phone — gallery delivered same day — and they commented on them while eating. That photo, that face, the one we repeated seven times.
Then they came back to the studio for part two: private cinema. Projector, bean bags, popcorn and Paddington. They opened presents with the film in the background.
A full half day in the centre, without moving
The result: photos at the studio, pizza on Ronda Universitat just across the street, private cinema back at the studio. All within the Plaza Cataluña area, 15 minutes by train from Sant Gervasi.
No car. No industrial estate. No activity monitor running the show.
There’s growing talk about experience gifts for kids as an alternative to toys, and this kind of plan is a good example: there’s nothing to take home, but there’s something to remember.

The question parents ask me most is whether girls that age actually have fun without someone directing the activity. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that’s precisely why it works.
They’re in control, not the adults
At 10, they don’t want to be told what to do. They want to choose the music, the backdrop, how many times they repeat a pose. The YOULO format allows that because no one is giving instructions: the initial explanation takes five minutes and after that the space is theirs.
Lea’s mum put it well after the session: they could do whatever they wanted. For a girl that age, that’s a lot.

How many girls can join a session in Barcelona?
In the YOULO Classic session (40 minutes) up to five girls can take part at the Barcelona studio. For larger groups, the Grand Portrait session (60 minutes) fits up to 15 people. Each extra person costs 10 €.
Do they need adult supervision during the session?
When you arrive at the studio in central Barcelona we give a five-minute explanation of how the mirror and remote work. From there, the girls are on their own in the space. Parents can wait in reception, grab a coffee at one of the cafés near Plaza Cataluña or go for a walk — the studio is right in the centre.
What if they don’t know how to pose?
They don’t need to know how to pose. The mirror lets them see themselves in real time, and the remote turns every photo into a game. Repeat poses, change position, check the result and do it again — that’s part of the fun, not a problem. Within ten minutes any group is in session mode without anyone telling them what to do.
Can you combine it with another plan in the Barcelona area?
Yes, and it works really well. The studio is metres from Ronda Universitat, where Can Pizza is — literally across the street. Plus, inside the studio itself you can book the private cinema space with projector, bean bags and popcorn for the second part of the birthday. There are also ice cream shops and cafés around Plaza Cataluña to round off the plan without going far.
